Music holds a very special place at Work it Out and in my own life since I could shake a move at my first concert. The year was 1989 and the scene was a Ziggy Marley and B52s show. I was three years old and while my dad wanted me to dance next to him, I kept breaking free to dance on my own.
My lifelong love affair with music is due to my parents, Paul and Toni. Being Hudson county natives, the two grew up in the backyard of New York City in the 1970s, which gave them front row seats to an amazing decade in music history. When they met, my mom was a 21-year-old nurse and a Motown loving, Studio 54 queen who was tending to my father who was two years younger and a Woodstock, Punk Rocker. Their love for music and for each other created a marriage and three daughters who hold the same passion for all types of Rock 'n Roll.
Music has always been in the background of my life and I owe a lot of that to my dad. He’s taken me to see the Rolling Stones five times before I turned 12 and a laundry list of others; Steve Miller Band, ACDC, John Fogerty, The Black Crows, U2, The Eagles, George Thorogood, Tom Petty, The Who, Robert Plant, Paul McCartney, Supertramp- to name a few. When I was a kid, my dad would babysit me every Monday and we would make "music videos" with me dancing to Depeche Mode and Paul Simon on my Fisher-Price play table. My imagination didn’t stop there; I was always pretending to be in music videos, even in the back of my grandparent’s Cadillac; always asking them to play the song louder!
While I’m no longer making “music videos”, I am lucky enough to share my love for it every day in the studio! Since opening Work it Out, music is in the creation of every class and in the background of our hallways and locker rooms. We inspire each instructor to be our DJs and to dig down deep to find an incomparable personal style when choosing their music and teaching their classes. We like to get creative with this process. For example we’ve had them profile their favorite entertainer. They come back with great information on how their idols act, what they say and how they dress. Then we pull it apart and apply it to classroom practices. This exercise enables our team to find their inner rockstar, which I believe is what sets us apart from the competition- we never play it safe.
WiO embraces all styles of music from rock to pop to hip-hop; our instructors are forever giving the unexpected. By attending our classes you can witness first hand that music, energy & style is in our class DNA. A song, a beat, a lyric is the purest form of an adrenaline boost and this couldn't be truer at our studios. Every day is a new opportunity to evolve our playlists and energy which we take very seriously. It’s our answer to inspiring and shocking you to be your healthiest and happiest.
