Meet the Gymnast - Noël Fiorentinos

Many of you know me as Noël the owner of Work it Out, the girl who got married in Greece, the gymnast, the sister of Devon and Tara or most commonly, which I prefer - The Boss. I juggle a lot of hats as the owner and Creative Director, no one day is the same for me; whether it’s managing staff, fixing a piece of equipment, designing a marketing campaign, or teaching a class. I am the visionary for the company, devoted to our growth and mission of creating and evolving an environment for the 21st century woman: well-rounded, happy, healthy and hard-working.

The one hat that I wear, that holds a special place in my heart is as the Gymnastics Program Director. My passion for gymnastics started when my parents enrolled me at  just 3 years old. Always a“go-getter," I became a competitive gymnast and went on to hold state, regional and national titles. I trained as a gymnast for 16 years of my life and later discovered my love for professional cheerleading. These sports allowed me the opportunity to see my passion for health and fitness and identify a booming trend. I have to say I was one of the first to hop on a bike at Soul Cycle and plié at Physique 57 almost a decade ago!

As a competitive gymnast 3-core traits were instilled in me: hard-work, determination, and goal setting, and  in 2010, they shined through and Work it Out was born. The location of 6th and Willow was actually a spot that I had pointed out to my mother a year earlier with confidence and determination that it would be mine. Hoboken has always held a special place in my heart. While I grew up in Secaucus, I created roots in Hoboken because of my involvement in the town's Cheer Dynamics All-Star team, which still exists today. This fall, I will coach the junior team, part-time.

The gymnastics program at Work it Out is something that my roots truly are steeped in. I wanted to create something that bridged a competitive and recreational program, so that all gymnasts could receive hands on training and develop skills whether they were coming once a week or three times a week. The curriculum I build for the program has it's foundations in the understanding of the sport and I work with each student and our coaches to ensure this knowledge is passed along.

As most things in life, gymnastics has come full circle for me. Gymnastics is the heart and soul of WiO and myself along with my sister Devon, oversee the entire program. I have even created and teach Flight Series, the adult version of WiO’s gymnastics class. I continue to utilize all of the strong attributes gymnastics provided me in my formative years in my everyday affairs as a young business owner. Creating killer work-outs that are fun and challenging is my speciality and I'm determined to continue on this mission.

New Time, New Day, Same Awesome Mom and Me Class

Baby G.A.P. is back with Miss Taylor for a 4-week summer session at a new time and a new studio! Our first ever 45-minute class for mommy and baby ages 18-36 months focused on Gymnastics And Play (G.A.P.) will be hosted at our River studio on Wednesday mornings at 10:15am. The mission of Baby G.A.P. is to create a fun, stimulating environment that instills the foundation of our gymnastics program, as well as that of a creative movement program. We were inspired to offer this class from the ever-growing popularity of our Kiddie Tumblers gymnastics program.

Taylor has taught for children’s theater and creative movement programs both in Towson, MD and Bayonne, NJ for the last several years and is currently on the staff for our gymnastics program. We will have two seasonal breaks that include Winter 12/22 - 1/2 and Spring 4/6 - 4/10). See our schedule below. Unlike other programs in town, we do not place children based on age. We take pride in evaluating gymnasts individually to ensure they are getting the most out of our classes and learning skills complimentary to their strengths and areas of growth. Additionally, our gymnasts can expect to receive foundational dance training throughout the session. Dance classes will incorporate foundational ballet and jazz techniques with an emphasis on balance, flexibility and choreography.

Attention Passengers: Flight Series is About to Take-Off

You've called, emailed, begged and pleaded. And finally - we've made it happen!

Get ready to take off every Tuesday evening starting February 25th at 6:45pm. Our Flight Series class will make you flip head over heels with excitement. Not only does it combine gymnastics, something we know a thing or two about, but it also will give you a kick butt workout by bringing the strength and flexibility elements that make gymnasts so fit!

About the class:  We have conjured up the secret recipe between guided gymnastics and a killer work out. Since most of our team is made up of gymnasts, dancers and cheerleaders we've asked ourselves all of the important questions like "What do we want out of this class?"  "How can we make it special yet keep you coming back week after week?" and most importantly..."How can we keep you safe?"

The following formula made perfect sense! A guided high intensity warm up including running, bouncing, leaping and stretching. Followed by a series of "back to basic" skills including; rolls, cartwheels, handstands, round-offs, aerials, limbers and walkovers. Finally the class will close with an open gym style set and a sweat series of challenging obstacle courses and strength. The class will be hosted at Work it Out River with Founder and long time gymnast Noël Fiorentinos. After a lot of thought and planning, we're sure that you will love Flight Series as much as we do!

What you need: Please come fully prepared with grip socks (or bare feet if you prefer), form fitting activewear, ponytails and a smile! Jewelry and baggy clothing should be left at home or in your locker. Previous gymnastics, tumbling and/or dance experience is necessary. Light spotting and form corrections will be incorporated however we will not be entertaining high level skills such as full tumbling passes. Reminiscing about our glory days when we could effortlessly throw double backs and triple fulls, will be permitted!

Sign-up for your first 'flight' today and give yourself an extra 15-minutes before class to fill out our questionnaire that will help us learn about each participant's 'flight experience.'

Meet WiO Gymnastics Mom, Dacquiri Calimese

Tell us a little bit about you and your family.
My name is Dacquiri and I have two girls, Dallas (7) and Aubrey (5). There is nothing typical about a day in our lives however one constant is lots of cartwheels, handstands and flips. We live, work and go to school in Hoboken and we enjoy being a part of the community. For me a constant is wellness and I strive for a balance in our life by eating healthy, exercising and having fun!

What is it like being a WiO Gymnastics mom.  Have you met a lot of other mom's through our program?
It's great being a WiO Gymnastics mom! My girls love the instructors and the program has helped them progress with their skills at an exceptional rate. They look forward to class each week and wish they could go every day, literally! The staff are welcoming and Devon and Noel have been fabulous teachers and supporters!! They foster a community where I have met many other moms with daughters of like minds which has been a lovely experience.

How did you find out about our WiO Gymnastics program and why do you and Dallas and Aubrey love the program?
Dallas saw a little girl doing a cartwheel when she was 6 and it was all over after that! She had to learn how to do it and practiced every day. Once she mastered that she had to learn more so I sought out WiO based on referrals from a few other moms. Dallas and Aubrey love the program because it provides them with the skills necessary to accomplish their gymnastic goals. For Aubrey mastering her cartwheel and for Dallas to master her back walkover. WiO gymnastics is also great for the variety and structure they offer the children which I love so, no matter what level gymnast, there is something for everyone to get involved and have a great time doing it!

What is the best thing you have watched Dallas and Aubrey learn?
The best thing I have watched Dallas and Aubrey learn was a cartwheel. So fundamental however once mastered it was a great confidence boost! They were encouraged to know if you apply yourself and practice you can achieve your goals and create new goals to continually broaden your horizons.

Was gymnastics ever part of your life growing up? What is your favorite physical activity you do for yourself as an adult?
Being a gymnast when I was younger it is awesome to see my girls take an interest as well. I really enjoyed tumbling and the uneven bars! Watching them do cartwheels everywhere reminded me of my days cartwheeling through fields and over hills as a young girl. Dance stole my heart when my legs grew too "leggy" and I have been dancing ever since. It is one of my most favorite things to do, next to running which I love since its time to myself.  Although dancing is the best because the girls and I can enjoy it together!

What is your favorite piece of mom advice for other WiO Moms?
My favorite piece of advice would be "smile everyday"! Someone said it to me and I keep it as a simple mantra. Being a mom is the most amazing and amazingly difficult job I've ever loved. These days when you're always connected and on the go its important to take a moment for the simple pleasures in life.

Flipping, Stretching & Smiling through Summer

We have been flipping, stretching, and smiling throughout our Summer Gymnastics Program! Since July 8th we have had a ton of fun throughout the first 4-weeks of the program, and now we have two more weeks of excitement left.

Our dedicated instructors, Brittney and Liz, have been doing a great job teaching our students new skills, and getting them strong for our 2013-2014 Gymnastics Season, starting September 16th.

Check out a couple photos from last week's classes - we had a themed week of Beam Skills for all our students, we also did a great activity of making our own life-sized gymnasts!

Miss Liz Dances into the WiO Gymnastics Program

Our gymnastics instructors are the best of the best! Learn a little bit more about instructor Liz's incredible training as a dancer and she brings her dance education to our WiO Gymnasts.

How did you get involved in dance?
I began taking dance classes when I was three years old. My mom would tell me I would pirouette and leap around the house as a child. She said I would beg her to sign me up for dance…and she did! I started taking creative movement classes until I was old enough to begin ballet lessons. I trained at several different dance studios growing up, such as Eleanor Connell School of Dance, Joffrey Ballet School, Roxey Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and Princeton Ballet School. When I first began ballet class, I started off taking one class a week. When that wasn’t enough for me, I signed up for more. And more. And more; until I was dancing every day.

What is your favorite childhood memory?
Although it is hard to choose just one, I would have to say my favorite childhood memory would be receiving my first tutu. It was white and red with white polka dots on it. I absolutely loved it! The only thing I did not like about it was how itchy the tulle was. But I must’ve gotten used to the itchiness, because I would dress up in it and dance around the house. I even wore it as a Halloween costume! I bet I would have worn that tutu everyday if my mom and dad allowed me to.

What is the most rewarding skill you ever learned?
I believe my most rewarding skill I ever learned was performing 32 consecutive turns on pointe. A prima ballerina typically will perform these turns, called fouette turns, during a classical ballet. It is considered to be one of the toughest moves to do; it requires an incredibly amount of strength, stamina, technique and focus. I remember working all summer during high school on these turns. When I finally was able to successfully complete 32 fouettes, I couldn’t wait to show my ballet teacher. It was such a rewarding feeling to know my hard work paid off.

What are the challenges you find as a dancer and an instructor?
For Myself: One of my biggest challenges I faced as an aspiring ballet dancer was learning to dance and perform bigger than my body. Unfortunately, I was not blessed with a “ballerina’s body.” I am petite, and as a child, it took me a while to comprehend that I wasn’t going to be 5’6” and be a part of New York City Ballet. I had some of the most outstanding ballet teachers during my intensive ballet training that were able to assist me with getting my leaps and jumps as high as the taller girls. It took years for me to embrace my petite frame, but as I progressed and received positive feedback from my instructors, my confidence grew.
As an Instructor: I have found that in order to manage, engage and interact with young children in a dance class setting is quite a challenge! Learning technical terms and stationary movements can get boring and tedious for children. In order to keep students interested about learning dance skills, I like to layer my instruction with imagery. For example, when I am teaching students how to hold their arms in fifth position, I ask students to imagine they are holding a giant beach ball. Or if we are practicing our leaps, I have students imagine they are trying to reach a yummy treat hanging from the ceiling. Young children grasp this idea extremely well, especially because they will typically play “pretend” outside of dance class.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My goal is to help students find their passion in dance. I like to incorporate teaching the foundation of dance while providing a fun and interactive environment for students.  I believe providing a positive learning environment is essential so that all students build self-confidence and make friends. I see potential in each student to overcome their obstacles and become the best dancers they can possibly be…and having fun while doing so.  Whether the student likes to take dance class “just for fun,” or is looking to dance at Lincoln Center in the future, I am there to provide them with the guidance they need to reach their goals.

WiOlympics, What a Day it Was!

Our gymnastics program is in it's second year and this past season has been WiO's most successful to date in terms of progress, participation and fun! This past Sunday WiO held the first annual WiOlympics, which was an opportunity for our gymnasts to showcase the skills they have been learning in front of their parents and loved ones.

We broke the gymnastics into these five groups below...

  • Kiddie Tumblers lead by Miss Liz and Miss Tara
  • Basic and Basic Intermediate lead by Miss Noel
  • Intermediate lead by Miss Devon
  • Intermediate lead by Miss Danielle
  • Advanced lead by Miss Brittany

Each group then showed off their talents on six different tracks.
1) Warm Up
2) Floor Skills
3) Beam
4) Back Bend Skills
5) Air Track
6)Vault

We even had a professional DJ pumping up the whole event with some great pop beats! All in all the day was a complete success! Each child at the end was awarded a medal for their hard work all season and everyone left feeling like a true Olympic Winner! Hats go off to our incredible gymnastics team who have made this program the success it is today! We can't wait till next year!

If you have a child interested in our Gymnastics program there is still time to sign up for our Gymnastics Summer programs! Also, registration is now open for our fall season! Learn all about it here!

WiO Gymnastics: End of Year Success!

As our gymnastics season comes to a close, we could not be more proud of our students who have participated in the program throughout the course of this year. From cartwheels to handstands, bridge-kickovers to back tucks, our little gymnasts have really shown us what they are made of.

They have learned how to work as a team and congratulate each other when learning a new skill. As well as learning to never give up and how to have confidence in themselves. Gymnastics at any age is a very difficult, demanding sport and our students have worked very hard to make strides toward their goals.

On June 23rd we will be hosting our very first end of season showcase, "The WiOlympics!" Each child will have the opportunity to show off their skills and routines in a competition like setting. Take a peek at these photos from our Advanced 2 class preparing for their big day!
