In a city full of repetition and jam-packed schedules Monday-Friday, it’s easy to get lost in the everyday routine. It’s even easier to wash away hobbies, dreams, and talents due to pure exhaustion. After graduating college and settling into my first job, I quickly discovered I wanted to invest my spare time into a hobby that I loved. This is not to say I wasn’t feeling motivated in the workplace, but I just felt there was something more I wanted to focus my energy on. I started my fashion blog in early 2014 as a way to channel my creativity and passion for style. I personally believe that in order to remain content and happy, you have to try your best to fulfill your daydream.

Don’t get me wrong, the balance of it all is really tough, you will question how you spend every second of your time. Starting a hobby or side business requires attention and dedication. Staying sane through it all while balancing a full-time job is half the battle, which is why I decided to share some of my own personal tricks for remaining focused and positive with you today:

  1. Manage your time and leverage your everyday routine. A side business takes a lot of energy. Make sure you carefully plan out the time you spend on your projects. Maximize on early mornings. I find myself most productive around 6am. Yes, that sounds terribly early, but completing tasks before heading off to work sets the tone for the rest of my day. A better start to the day will hopefully result in a better ending. Also, it’s important to leave some quiet time for yourself at the end of the day. In my case, it’s catching up on my favorite TV shows.

  2. Exercise! The best way to recharge is by working out. Whether it’s a cycling class, yoga, pilates, or even a jog through the park, there are many different ways to increase your heart rate and refocus your mind.

  3. Don’t beat yourself up. No one is perfect. There will be days when you fail, but treat those moments as valuable lessons for your future.

  4. Always spin the positive. There are two ways to address every situation. You can open your arms to critical feedback and unfortunate situations, or you can react negatively to them. Always try to find light in the situation and refocus your energy to the potential positive outcome.

  5. Invest your energy wisely. Are you starting to notice a pattern to accomplishing your goals? It’s all about energy, energy, energy. I have two comments for this last tip. 1) It’s okay to say no sometimes. Don’t spread yourself too thin. 2) Surround yourself with empowering, positive, and supportive people. Both of these pointers are equally important. Learn to prioritize. Having a side business requires this energy. Don’t go wasting it!

Lastly, always remember that your side hustle has the potential to blossom. Stay dedicated and do it for as long as it makes you happy…and then some!
